Renaud Dwelshauvers joins Théo Eloy for the second episode of Sequence, the DNA Solutions podcast. An independent business analyst and guest lecturer, he discusses the work of connecting business needs with software development, and what teaching looks like when students have access to AI tools.

Business analysis starts with a shared language

Renaud describes the business analyst as a link between a client's needs and the specifications a development team can use. People can share an objective while using the same words differently. Understanding the business vocabulary is part of the work, alongside understanding the technical constraints.

The discussion also covers cultural differences in communication, learning a new industry after working as a developer, and building a career through expertise and client relationships.

Make the scope and commitments explicit

Théo and Renaud discuss the importance of putting the project scope and each party's commitments in writing. For Renaud, the difficult part is making the scope as complete and unambiguous as possible. Technical expertise alone does not remove the need to check that everyone understands what will be delivered.

They also explore listening to clients, noticing when a demonstration does not meet their expectations, and the role of empathy in business analysis.

Learn the basics before relying on AI

Drawing on his teaching experience, Renaud distinguishes getting an answer from understanding how to check it. An AI tool can supply an Excel formula, but students still need the foundations to assess whether the result makes sense.

His approach combines learning the basics with more complex exercises that use AI. The aim is to develop both practical skills and critical judgment. He also explains how examples from his professional work help students see a purpose in what they learn.
